What We Believe
Universal and Local
The Church of God isn’t restricted to one place, a membership list, or one congregation. All God’s children around the world – people who have experienced His saving power (born again) – belong to the Church of God in its universal form. As a local congregation, we identify ourselves as being an expression of this universal church. It is our salvation “in” Christ that brings together a people who are “not of the world” (John 17:16). We are unified through our relationship with Christ. The Church of God is a place of harmony and love among believers.
Saved by Grace through Faith
Our individual or collective works are not sufficient to create or maintain our relationship with Christ. Good works cannot justify us with the Holy God. Rather, we are saved by God’s grace through faith. Grace is God’s undeserved love, which He demonstrated to us by the shedding of Christ’s blood on our behalf. Through faith in Jesus we are set free from sin (Ephesians 2: 8-9). Deliverance from sin (salvation) is a free gift of God. Following Jesus produces a holy life that is pleasing to God and a blessing to others. (1 Peter 1:15)
Belonging to God’s Family
The Church of God is made up of believers that the Lord adds to His Church (Acts 2:47). Entrance into God’s Church is through Jesus Christ, who is the door (John 10:49). The door is not penance, baptism, catechism or confirmation class but Christ. When we receive Christ as our personal Saviour we become members of God’s Church and family (John 1:12). Since we belong to God’s family together, you will often hear us referring to one another as “sisters” and “brothers”.
Together as a Church, we rely on God’s Holy Spirit. It is the Holy Spirit that guides us in all truth as we dig deeper into the Word of God – the Bible – and grow to be more like Jesus. In addition it is God’s will for every Christian to be sanctified – filled with the Holy Spirit.
We invite you to join us on this journey – following Jesus together.
